Habeas Corpus: may you have a body to exhibit

Museo de Arte del Banco de la República, Bogotá · 2010

the exhibition

The body in the collection: warm rooms, low plinths and suspended sculpture.

Built exhibition, 2010.

The exhibition design uses warm-coloured walls and timber floors to unify pieces from different periods on two levels of the museum. Sculptures sit on low plinths or are suspended, so visitors circle them at body height; spot lighting defines each piece against neutral walls.

The installation combines plinths, walls and suspension to accommodate different presentations of the body. The exploded view identifies these supports without confusing them with the artworks they hold.

The project, chapter by chapter.

The represented body transforms the distance between artwork and visitor.

01

The body occupies the room

Low plinths let artworks share the room’s visual field. The central sculpture does not rely on a backing wall and can be approached from more than one direction.

Moving between works

Plan and section describe intervals between artworks and differences in height. The route becomes a sequence of approaches, leaving room to observe pieces from distinct positions within the exhibition.

Red lines link exhibits and viewing areas. Numbering distinguishes the two archived plans without assigning undocumented elevations.

04

The scale of the object

The colonial piece and large painting introduce different viewing scales. Coloured walls gather series together and change the background against which visitors perceive the exhibited artworks.

The title opens the route

Title and introductory walls establish the subject before direct encounters with artworks. They form a reading transition that prepares entry into the space occupied by bodies and representations.
